Officers’ uniforms were decorated with gold lace which, in the East Surreys had the distinction of a thin black edge. This lace can be seen on the edge of the collar and the cuff. Other ranks had a round, straight topped cuff from 1881 to c1902 but the officers had the pointed cuff which allowed for a more decorative lace and braid pattern. The tunic here belonged to a 2nd lieutenant so has no rank badge on the gold shoulder cords. The braiding on the collar and cuffs was more elaborate for captains and above. The collar has a star shaped bi-metal regimental badge which indicates that the tunic dates around the late 1890s. The buttons are of regimental pattern, and there is a white leather waist-belt with regimental clasp. The blue field service cap is the pattern introduced after 1895 and has a Victorian regimental cap badge.
