George Richards Greaves was born on 9 Nov 1831 at Windermere. He was commissioned in Nov 1849. He served in the Indian Mutiny and subsequently held various staff posts. He was married twice, to Ellen Hutchinson in 1859 and to Julia Rose Venour (nee Morris) in 1908. He wrote his autobiography: Memoirs of General Sir George Richards Greaves (London, J Murray 1924)
