The citation says: On 20 April 1915 at Hill 60, Belgium, when his trench was heavily attacked by German grenade-throwers, Private Dwyer climbed on to the parapet and although subjected to a hail of bombs at close quarters, succeeded in dispersing the enemy by the effective use of hand-grenades. Earlier in the day he had left his trench under heavy shell-fire to bandage his wounded comrades.
Edward Dwyer as born in Fulham on 25 Nov 1895. He joined the 1st Battalion East Surreys and it was in April 1915 in the Second Battle of Ypres that the 1st Battalion won three Victoria Crosses on Hill 60. Dwyer’s award was gazetted on 22 May 1915 and he reached the rank of corporal, but sadly he was killed at Guillemont on 3 Sep 1916. He was buried in Flatiron Cemetery, France.
