The 1930 permit to display of the regimental badge on the Regimental Colour did not apply to the King’s Colour so the battalion number was placed in the centre. The battle honours for the two World Wars were too numerous to be borne on the Colour so regiments were confined to ten for each war to be emblazoned on the red cross of St George that forms the dominant part of the Union Flag. The same honours are repeated on the other side of the flag. The staff is topped with a Royal crest, a crowned lion standing (statant) on a larger crown. This top dates from 1868 when the previous spearhead was discontinued.
