The 1st Battalion served in India from 1885 to 1903 and this drummer stands behind the kettle drums used for static performances. He also has his side drum for marching. The device painted on the front of all three drums is the Royal Arms with trophies. This can be seen on the drums of the 1st Battalion photographed in 1910 so must have been a traditional badge for the 1st Battalion drums. The drummer is a private with two good conduct stripes on his left forearm. The badge on his upper right arm is an embroidered band badge. He wears a scarlet undress frock which has a white collar with regimental badges.
