This example was photographed on the white collar of a sergeant’s dress tunic dated 1912, one of the last dress tunics before 1914 when all soldiers were ordered to wear khaki. The badge was approved for the regiment in 1881 when the 31st and 70th Regiments were amalgamated. The topmost point of the star is displaced by the King’s crown. To the centre is the shield bearing the Arms of Guildford. The Arms of Guildford came from the 1st Royal Surrey Militia which became the 3rd Battalion, and the star was the regimental badge of the 3rd Royal Surry Militia which became the 4th Battalion.
