William Woods was a lieutenant in the Hampshire Yeomanry from 10 Jan 1877.He was promoted to captain on 20 Jan 1883 and major on 23 Dec 1891. He succeeded Colonel Crichton to the command of the Carabiniers on 19 June 1895. He was lieutenant-colonel commandant for the period of the Boer War although he did not serve in South Africa. His time in command terminated on 20 June 1902. The photo shows him at the Yeomanry summer camp in 1902 enjoying the last days of his seven-year tenure. He wears a cavalry patrol jacket and pill-box forage cap.
