The white metal helmet was adapted to have a plume from 1894. The officers and men had a white horse-hair falling plume, and the band was distinguished by having a red plume. The helmets were retained but the spike was removed and replaced by a plume holder of similar shape. The officers’ plume holder was made taller by having a ball shape at the base. Other ranks’ did not have this and consequently the plume was not as high.
The fittings on the helmet were white metal for other ranks. The badge on the front was based on a white metal star but the garter and crown in the centre were brass. The crown is Victorian and the garter is inscribed HAMPSHIRE CARABINIERS. The rose is silver metal on a black background, but some examples have a brass rose and (probably earlier specimens) inscribed HAMPSHIRE YEOMANRY.
