Yeomanry regiments usually confined their periods of training to a few weeks in camp during the summer. The Hampshire Carabiniers were active at other times of the year, but in this photo they are attending summer camp in 1914. The officers walk along the line of tents, whose occupants stand to attention for the Colonel’s inspection. The officer leading the group is Colonel Crichton wearing dress uniform with a peaked forage cap. His sleeves are well covered with gold braid and lace whereas the other officers have a single gold Austrian knot. He was appointed Honorary Colonel in 1905 and would have worn this uniform from c1903. The officer with a Sam Browne belt over his no.2 uniform is Captain J J Readman of the Scots Greys who was adjutant from 1911. The men on the right of the picture are a Private and a Trumpeter who wears white aiguillettes, in the dress uniform and forage cap.
