This style of uniform conforms to the regular light dragoon regiments in the British army in the Regency period and the early reign of George IV. The independent Troops had different uniforms and this one was in the colours adopted by the Isle of Wight Cavalry; blue with red facings and gilt buttons and epaulettes. The portrait is of Sir Leonard Worsley Holmes Bt MP, commandant of that unit. The print is by Henry Hoppner Meyer, based on a painting by John Griffiths. It was published in 1820.
