Bandsmen and trumpeters wore the helmet with a red plume after horse-hair plumes were introduced for the Hampshire Carabiniers in 1894. However, the helmet dates from 1884 when the top had a spike. The white metal helmet had white metal fittings for other ranks, but a brass garter, and in this case, a brass rose.
