The drummer wears the interim dress uniform which was the blue frock with silver shoulder chains. This particular photo is unusual because it shows the frock as having white collar patches. This may have been peculiar to the band, but later photos of the rank-and-file, as well as trumpeters, in this uniform do not have these patches. It is also unusual because the drummer is wearing trousers instead of breeches and boots. He has a white pouch-belt and his helmet has a red plume.
The drum banner is more elaborate than the one in the 1887 print. The date it was produced is not known but a photo taken in 1895 shows it in use. It has a Victorian crown and crossed carbines over a Tudor rose. The embroidery around the central design is very elaborate. The horse is black. The drum-horse in the 1895 photo is a skewbald or piebald. The rider uses stirrup reins and the bridle has the signature plaited head-rope of the Hampshire Carabiniers.
