The corporal in this photo served in the Winchester Troop which was part of B Squadron. He wears the forage cap introduced in 1907, with the blue serge frock. This had silver shoulder chains with the brass regimental title and a small brass button. He is turned away from the camera to allow a view of his two gold lace rank stripes and his fleur-de-lys badge which proved his proficiency at scouting. This badge is metal but it was also embroidered. The fleur-de-lys symbol was chosen as a scout badge because it was the recognised symbol for north on a compass or map.
