The Yeomanry

Mess Waistcoat 1903

The mess uniform for officers of the Hants Carabiniers changed in 1903 so that the previous blue waistcoats with silver braiding was changed to a white buckskin waistcoat, or vest, richly ornamented with gold lace and circled Russia braid, and frogged with gold gimp. This was a direct imitation of the mess waistcoat worn by the 6th Dragoon Guards, as stated in the Hawkes tailor’s notes. This pattern was discontinued in 1906 when the yeomanry were ordered to scale back on their sartorial extravagance.
