The Troop commander and his men are lined up in parade order in blue tunics and plumed helmets. They wear white leather pouch-belts but no canvas haversacks. The officer has a gold laced dress pouch-belt and silver lace around his collar and pointed cuffs. The detail is not clear but it looks as if he has some extra silver braid on the cuff to denote the rank of captain. It can be seen that the officer’s helmet is slightly taller, and the star badge on his helmet is darker than the badges on the mens’ helmets. This is because the officers’ helmets had gilt fittings as opposed to the OR helmets that had silver.
To the rear of the men is the Troop Sergeant Major wearing a row of medals. He had served in a regular cavalry regiment on active service abroad. All the men have a white head rope attached to their horses’ bridles, plaited in the style adopted by the Hampshire Carabiniers.
