Lal Singh was Subadar-Major of the 104th Wellesley’s Rifles for six and half years, from 18 June 1920. He was appointed to the Order of British India and Sardar Bahadur, as well as being awarded the Indian Distinguished Service Medal for his service in the Great War. The regimental history says that in January 1926, when the regiment was under canvas at Razmak in Waziristan, Honorary Lieutenant and Subadar-Major Lal Singh (as he was then) organised a large vegetable garden which provided the men with fresh vegetables throughout the summer. He retired at the end of December 1926 with the rank of Honorary Captain.
