This watercolour figure is taken from the Brown University Digital Repository. It was painted by CCP Lawson in 1959 and titled ‘6th Rajputanas, c.1914’ (1897). So the dating of this drummer is difficult. The 6th Rajputanas Regiment was formed in 1921 so both dates of 1914 and 1897 would be wrong. The drummer is a Rajput, dressed in the green, cool weather review order uniform with scarlet piping and shoulder straps. The pagri and puttees are green and the boots are brown. A scarlet fringe hangs on the left side of his pagri and he has a white metal badge on the front. There is a green cord across his chest with tassels at his left shoulder. This cord was for a bugle that hangs on his right hip. It was the usual practice for drummers to double up as buglers. The drum is suspended from a black leather carriage and bears the Rifle badge on the front with regimental title and battle honours on scrolls. He has a black leather waist-belt which probably supports a sword on his left hip. Beneath the belt is a scarlet cummerbund with black stripes. The uniform basically agrees with the Lovett painting of a Rajput Rifles NCO in 1909.
