This page from Frank James’s regimental history of the 4th Bombay NI/104th Wellesley’s Rifles shows two pouch-belt plates and a pagri badge. They all have the Guelphic crown that was used on badges during the reign of Queen Victoria. The battle honours help us to date the pouch-belt plates but the 4th pagri/puggri badge can only be dated from 1842 when the regiment converted to Rifles, and up to 1903 when they were renumbered 104th. Both pouch-belt plates have the Afghan War honours so the plates date after 1881 when the honours for KANDAHAR 1880 and AFGHANISTAN 1879-80 were awarded. The older plate (2) includes the dates on the honours, but the other plate (3) leaves them off. The caption is careful to use the full title of the regiment for plate 3: ‘4th Regiment (Rifles), (1st Battalion The Bombay Rifle Regiment)’. This title was in use from 1889 to 1901. The centre of the Maltese Cross has a monogram BRR. There are differences of spelling; Multan is spelt MOULTAN on 3 but MOOLTAN on 2, BENI BOO ALLI on 3, but BENI BOO ALI on 2, and KOOSHAB on 3, but KHOOSHAB on 2.
