The 4th Regiment Bombay Native Infantry was designated a Rifle Corps in May 1841, but their green uniforms, arms and accoutrements were not delivered from England until the following year. The badge conformed to the British Rifle Brigade pattern and was placed on the front of the officers’ green shako. The shako was the Albert pattern introduced in 1844, but the badge follows the 1830 pattern. The Victorian crown topped a universal star with a Maltese cross surrounded by a laurel wreath. The regimental number IV is in the centre and two battle honours are placed on two arms of the cross: SERINGAPATAM and BENI BOO ALLI. The first honour granted to the regiment was for Seringapatam on 20 May 1823, and the second was for Beni Boo Alli on 11 Feb 1831. The next honour was awarded in 1849, for PUNJAB, so this badge pre-dates that.
