This Players cigarette card from the British Empire series illustrates the dress uniform of the 6th Rajputana Rifles. The uniform was the same for all six battalions. The officer is a Subadar-Major of one of the battalions, although which one is unclear. He is a Rajput, so is not the Subadar-Major of the 1st Battalion, who in 1938 was Ganesha Ram, a Jat. The green uniform with scarlet facings was the uniform of the 104th Wellesley’s Rifles as well as the 123rd Outram’s, and the 125th Napier’s Rifles, but became the uniform of all six battalions in 1921. The tunic has a scarlet collar and cuffs edged with a half inch black silk lace edge. The cuffs were 6.5 inches deep in front and 2.25 inches at the side and back. The half inch black silk lace went all around the cuff showing one eighth of an inch of facing cloth. Scarlet quarter inch piping edged the front of the tunic, and the centre of the back skirt. The shoulder straps were scarlet with a black edging. Eight gilt buttons fastened the tunic down the front, and there were two more at the back, at waist level. This uniform was the cool weather review order, not mentioned in Lt-Col Frank James’s History of the 1st Battalion. The figure stands in front of the War Memorial Arch, New Delhi.
