Cecil Ashford Hold was born on 20 May 1909. He served in the ranks for more than 14 years. He was appointed Bandmaster of the Royal Scots Greys on 26 April 1939. The photo shows him in the service dress of a warrant officer 1st class which at first sight looks like an officer's uniform, but the shoulder straps have no rank badges. There is an embroidered crown and lyre badge on his right forearm which is only just visible.
