The 8th Hussars crossing the Vaal River on 24th May 1900. They arrived in South Africa on 9th March and a recce patrol under Capt Burns-Lindow had been involved in a skirmish with Boers on 11th April. Later in April they fought at the battle of Wepener where four men of the regiment were wounded.
