Lieutenant-Colonel George Ansell served in the South African War and commanded the 5th Dragoon Guards from 1911. He was killed at Nery on 1st Sept 1914. He had previously distinguished himself at Elouges. His son and grandson also served in the regiment. The son was a well-known show-jumper, blinded in WW2, and his grandson rose to be a general.
