The final pitched battle in this war took place on 21 June 1798, at Vinegar Hill and on the streets of Enniscorthy, County Wexford. The Hill was the largest camp and headquarters of the Wexford United Irishmen. The first attack, by infantry and artillery, on the town of Enniscorthy failed, and guns were captured by the Irishmen. A second attack involved the cavalry and the Irish were driven towards Slaney Bridge. This print shows light cavalry in action in the foreground, perhaps the 9th Light Dragoons. The woman riding side-saddle fights for the Irish cause. The cavalry were also employed after the defeat of the Irishmen, pursuing those fleeing the field of battle.
