The unusual design of this sabretache suggests that it was probably made in India. The 9th Lancers were stationed in various parts of India from 1842 to 1859 during which time the undress sabretache would have been subjected to a great deal of wear and tear; and ordering replacements from England would have taken too much time. The Guelphic crown indicates that this is from the Victorian period. The A R cypher of Queen Adelaide has a similar design to the embroidered cypher on the dress sabretaches. The scroll below this is inscribed ROYAL LANCERS. The crossed lances are based on the bamboo lances used in India because of the abundance of bamboo in parts of the country. Sabretaches were discontinued for lancer regiments in 1854.
