9th Lancers

Punniar Star

The medal, made of bronze from the Maharattas’ guns, had a silver centre. The ribbon was rainbow coloured ‘watered’, the official Military Ribbon of India. It was made in Calcutta and issued to all the British and Indian soldiers involved in the battle of Punniar on 29 December 1843. This particular example was awarded to Private Donohoe who won the VC in the Indian Mutiny 14 years later.
