Henry Marshall was born in Godalming, Surrey, on 22 April 1831. He was the son of George Marshall, a timber merchant, and his wife Sarah. He joined the 17th Lancers as a cornet on 1 May 1855 and served in the Crimea from 15 Sep 1855 to April 1856. He transferred to the 9th Lancers in 1859 and served in India during the latter stages of the Indian Mutiny, involved in the pursuit of Tantia Topee. He reached the rank of lieutenant-colonel and was appointed commanding officer of the 9th Lancers on 27 June 1874. He retired on half pay in 1879, replaced by Lt-Colonel R S Cleland.
He was married to Alice Heath Jary on 18 July 1860; they lived at 12 Tongham Street, Seale, Surrey. In the 1911 census they were recorded as having had 5 children, 3 still alive, one called Harold. They were then living at Stanford House, Warrington Road, Ipswich, where he died on 30 April 1914.

The photo taken c1860, shows him wearing the stable dress of the 9th Lancers, blue uniform with red collar and cuffs and gold lace. The pouch-belt on his left shoulder is covered with gold lace and has gilt chains and pickers.
