Frederick Thwaites Lund joined the 9th Lancers as a 2nd Lieutenant on 17 Aug 1887, promoted to Lieutenant 15 Feb 1888, Captain 11 May 1892. During the Boer War he was awarded a brevet of Major on 29 Nov 1900, and brevet of Lieutenant-Colonel 26 June 1902. He was promoted to the substantive rank of major on 27 Sep 1902 on which date he retired.
He served in all the actions that involved the 9th Lancers in the Boer War. He was mentioned in Despatches and his medal had eight clasps. Major Lund commanded C Squadron and was put in charge of a column of 600 men formed at De Aar at the end of June 1901. This column included C Squadron 9th Lancers, Brabant’s Horse and some Yeomanry. He distinguished himself with the column’s first action when they defeated the Boers besieging Richmond. His command lasted 9 months during which there was much disappointment due to lack of action against the enemy. In January 1902 Lund’s column escorted a convoy of wagons from Matjesfontein to Sutherland. The escort duty was taken over by another column ‘which allowed the convoy to be surprised and captured’ The Ninth Queen’s Royal Lancers 1715 - 1936. Sheppard’s history comments, ‘The achievements of this little detachment [C Squadron] under its enterprising leader had been fully worthy of the high reputation of the 9th Lancers’.
Captain Lund was married in November 1898, to Ethel Lennox Vertue Yerburgh. He died in November 1914. The photo is from a group of officers of the 9th Lancers taken at Modder River in December 1899.
