Lord John George Lennox was a captain when he served at Waterloo as ADC to the Duke of Wellington. He was the son of the Duke and Duchess of Richmond so was, of course, at the Duchess’s famous ball in Brussels on the eve of the battle of Quatre Bras.
Lord John George Lennox was born on 3 Oct 1793, the fourth of fourteen children to the Duke and Duchess born between 1790 and 1809. He joined the army on 24 Oct 1811 and was a cornet in the 9th Light Dragoons on 13 Feb 1812. He was a staff officer in the Peninsular War, working for the Duke of Wellington. For his services in the Waterloo campaign he was given a brevet of Captain on 9 Nov 1815 and substantive captain on 27 June 1816. He left the 9th Lancers in June 1824 and served in the 3rd Garrison Battalion, reaching the rank of lieutenant-colonel.
He was married to Louisa Frederika Rodney on 29 June 1818. They had three children, one of which won the Victoria Cross in the Crimea, General Sir Wilbraham Oates Lennox VC. Lord John George Lennox was MP for West Sussex from 1832 to 1841 and appointed Gentleman of the Bedchamber to Prince Albert. He died at the age of 80 on 10 Nov 1873. The rather poor reproduction of his portrait shows him in the uniform of the 9th Lancers c1817 with his Waterloo medal.
