Chardin Philip Johnson entered the army as a cornet in the 9th Lancers in 1845. His service record is as follows:- In the Indian Mutiny he commanded a squadron at Lord Clyde’s relief of Lucknow. He was at the battle of Cawnpore on 6 Dec 1857 and the action at Seraighat. At Shumshabad he commanded the cavalry which consisted of 2 squadrons of the 9th Lancers, and 2 squadrons of Hodson’s Horse. He was a staff officer under Hope Grant at the siege and capture of Lucknow, and the action at Koorsee. He commanded a squadron in the summer campaign in Oudh and Rohilcund, including the actions at Rhodamow and Allygunge, the capture of Bareilly, the action at Shahjehanpore and the pursuit of Mahomdee. Twice mentioned in despatches, Brevet of Major, medal with clasp.
