Bloomfield Gough was born on 23 Dec 1851, the son of General Sir John Bloomfield Gough and Sir John’s third wife, Elizabeth Agnew Arbuthnot. His half-brother was Major-General Hugh Sutlej Gough, son of Sir John’s second wife, Margaret McGaskill.
Bloomfield Gough joined the army as an ensign in the 1st Battalion, Rifle Brigade. He transferred to the 9th Lancers as a lieutenant in 1873 and was a captain in the regiment during the Second Afghan War of 1878-80. He was at the capture of Ali Masjid, the battle of Killa Kazi and the operations around Kabul in December 1879. He was on Lord Roberts’ march from Kabul to Kandahar and the subsequent battle of Kandahar. He was mentioned in despatches several times and given a brevet of major.
Lieutenant-Colonel Bloomfield Gough was married in 1884 to Maria Jean Hunter, daughter of Matthew Dysart Hunter. They had seven children, 3 sons and 4 daughters. He died in Sheffield in 1904.
