Henry Bushman was born in Sheffield on 26 June 1841 and entered the army as a cornet in the 7th Hussars on 9 Nov 1858. He served on the North West Frontier in 1863, in which year he was appointed Adjutant of the 7th Hussars. He transferred to the 9th Lancers as a captain in 1872 and fought in the Zulu War of 1879. He was in the operations against the Sekukuni and the capture of the stronghold where he was in command of the Eastern attack. For this he was awarded a brevet of lieutenant-colonel. He was with the 9th Lancers in the Second Afghan War of 1879-80, and was on Frederick Roberts’s march from Kabul to Kandahar. He was present at the battle of Kandahar. He was married to Laura Bonnar Lewis in 1899 in London, and had at least one child, Margaret Kathleen Bushman. The photo is of a portrait painted c1900 when he was appointed Colonel of the 9th Lancers. He wears the dress uniform of a field officer of the regiment with medals that include the Kabul to Kandahar Star.
