9th Lancers

Officers, September 1899

Officers of the 9th Lancers posed for this group photo in Muttra shortly before the regiment boarded the train for Bombay en route to South Africa. Major Little, seated in the middle, was in command, in the absence of Lt-Col Bloomfield Gough who joined them later at the Orange River. Lieutenant Blackwood stands on the extreme left; he wrote the account of the disastrous sea voyage of C Squadron. Lieutenant Frederick Allhusen sits second from the left; his machine gun section allowed Gough’s squadrons to escape from a Boer attack.
