The cigarette card was in a series produced by Player’s in 1924. The lower image is a very poor reproduction of a photo of the actual drum banner published as a small picture in the illustrated dictionary ‘I See All’. The photo shows the true shape of the reversed cypher of Queen Adelaide whereas the coloured card has a more confused version. There were 12 battle honours on the previous drum banners, from PENINSULA to AFGHANISTAN, but four more were added after the Boer War; MODDER RIVER, RELIEF OF KIMBERLEY, PAARDEBERG and SOUTH AFRICA 1899-1902, this last one being placed just below the garter. The crown is not the King’s crown as would be expected for a post-1901 banner, it is the Hanoverian crown, relating to Queen Adelaide, consort of the last Hanoverian monarch.
