This Drum Horse of the 9th Lancers was presented to the regiment by Queen Victoria in 1886. It was a cream coloured filly named Queen Adelaide and was attached to A Troop. The drum banner is red with a gold lace edge and gold embroidery. The central device was a blue velvet garter inscribed QUEEN’S ROYAL LANCERS and AR in the centre, being a special monogram for Queen Adelaide, not reversed. There were 12 battle honours on the wreath of oak leaves, crossed lances and a Guelphic crown. The shabraque in this case had been provided from an officer’s charger as there was no proper drum horse shabraque at that time. The front part was folded back in an unsatisfactory attempt to show the crown and VR cypher. The kettle-drummer is a private wearing dress uniform like the rest of the regiment except that he has a red horsehair plume on his lance cap.
