Simkin’s second rendering of this scene (the first being in 1880) shows the officer in review order followed by the trumpeter who transmits the officer’s order to the mounted Troop behind. He is blowing on a bugle, which, in this painting clearly has cords and tassels in red, yellow and blue, the Royal colours. There is an indication of tassels on his back which must be attached to the trumpet. His lance cap horsehair plume is black and white, confirming once more that trumpeters did not have red plumes like the musicians of the regiment.
