The 9th Lancers reverted to blue uniforms c1842 after a decade of wearing red coats on the whim of King William IV. This time they had scarlet facings, but no plastron front to their coat. The trumpeter depicted in this scene by M A Hayes in 1842 wears a uniform of the same pattern as the rest of the regiment. They are in marching order so there is no plume on the lance cap, but in review order he would have a red plume, distinctively different from the black plumes worn by the men. Hayes has shown a grey horse in the print which is probably the trumpeter’s. He also shows four lances belonging to the four men which indicates that this trumpeter carried one. No other paintings or prints show the trumpeter carrying a lance so it must be a mistake.
