The shabraque of the 9th Lancers after 1855 was less complicated than the pattern worn from 1830 to 1855. Queen Adelaide’s cypher was discontinued and replaced by Queen Victoria’s VR. The 1861 Dress Regulations for officers:
‘SHABRACQUES
LIGHT DRAGOONS AND LANCER REGIMENTS
To be of blue cloth, cut round before and behind, three feet eleven inches in length, two feet six inches in depth, trimmed with gold overall lace, lined moleskin.
9th LANCERS
To have the fore corners, V.R. and crown in gold, on hind corners, crown over V.R., within garter, with the words (Ninth Lancers) round it, and the lances crossed under the garter, all gold.’
The crown was the guelphic crown which also appeared on the brass bit bosses and breast ornament of the charger’s tack. The garter was a quilted blue velvet with the title embroidered in gold.
