This brass badge resembles the badge on the undress black leather sabretache worn by the mounted officer in Denis Dighton’s painting of Officers in Lancer Uniform 1817. It is dated from 1816 when the 9th Light Dragoons became the 9th Lancers. The painting would need to be inspected closely to see if there is enough detail to compare it. Generally speaking the royal cypher during the Regency period was either GR for George III or GP for the Prince Regent. The reversed GR cypher dates it after 1820, when the Prince became King George IV, and before 1830 when the regiment was honoured with the patronage of Queen Adelaide.
