The 9th converted to Lancers in 1816. This gilt plate covered the front of the lance cap, or czapka, worn by officers. The beaded edging is unattractive and far less impressive than the rayed backing on later plates, but it was covered by the chin scales that were tied up to a hook above the plate. There was only one battle honour at this stage, PENINSULA inscribed at the base. The Royal Arms takes centre stage, with the crowned lion and chained unicorn supporting an oval shield which is surmounted by the Royal Crest. The shield is within the Garter, inscribed HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE. It is quartered for England, Scotland and Ireland, with the shield of Hanover in the centre: symbol of the Kings of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland 1816-1837. The small arms in the centre has a coronet above, and a shield divided three ways, two lions Passant on the left, a lion Rampant on the right, and a running horse in the lower segment. In the very centre is a tiny shield bearing a crown which is the augmentation for the office of Arch Treasurer of the Holy Roman Empire.
