The 9th Dragoons converted to light dragoons by an order of 1783, but the date of the change of uniform is not known. This style of helmet was adopted for the light dragoon regiments, sometimes known as a Tarleton. The black turban on this officer’s example identifies it as dating after 1797, previously the regiment had a buff turban. The large badge on the right side is a conjoined Thistle, Rose and Shamrock which could only have been devised after 1800 when the Act of Union with Ireland was passed. This Union badge is not specifically regimental but the silver strap over the peak identifies the helmet as being IXth Light Dragoons. The addition of the shamrock would have resonated with the rank and file who would have consisted almost entirely of Irishmen. The helmet was worn until 1812 when the shako was taken into wear.
