This photo was taken while the 9th Lancers were stationed in post-war Germany. They wear no.1 dress which was developed to provide a ceremonial uniform for the army, less costly than full dress as worn before WW1, and more utilitarian. It was based on the undress frock but had scarlet collar patches and steel chain-mail shoulder straps. The blue cloth waist-belt came as standard with the tunic but on parade a white leather waist-belt would be expected. A few years later the yellow and red striped girdle would be worn. The forage cap is blue with scarlet cap band and scarlet quarterwelts. The rank badge for this SSM is an embroidered crown and wreath worn on the forearm with a silver NCO regimental arm badge. He is a veteran of WW2 with an array of campaign medals, although the sergeant next to him has no medals. The whole squad is armed with lances which have been brought out of store for a special occasion.
