The dress uniform for officers reached the end of its life in 1914 when war broke out. This 1912 painting shows the final form of the uniform. The lance cap has drooping swan’s feathers according to the 1900 Dress Regulations, and the gold cap-lines, attached to the back of the cap form only two cords around the officer’s chest before draping across from right to left, ending in olivet ends. The tunic was almost unchanged from 1881 when rank badges were moved from the collar to the shoulder straps. The gold pouch-belt had remained unchanged since 1843 and the gold laced girdle was worn around the waist, but not supporting his sword which was still slung from a hidden belt. There was no sabretache worn since 1902 and the embroidered shabraque had been discontinued since the mid-1890s.
