The frock-coat is blue cloth with black mohair wide lace and black braid figuring. It had a closed collar, laced and braided, and shoulder straps with gilt rank badges. These badges were displayed on the collar prior to 1881 and not worn by officers below the rank of major in undress. The officer wears dismounted trousers with gold stripes. The frock-coat was usually only worn for dismounted duty, when not parading with the men.
The officer on the right, in stable dress, shows the red piping on the back seams of his jackets, and the gold-laced hem forming a point at the back with a gold ‘dummy’ on each side. The gold dress pouch-belt is more imposing from the back, and his sword and sabretache hang from gold-laced leather slings attached to a hidden waist-belt worn high on the waist to be concealed beneath the short jacket.
