The back view of the corporal shows the pattern of the tunic skirt where false pockets are edged in red with three buttons on each side and two buttons at the waist just below the yellow and red girdle. By this time the skirts of cavalry tunics had been slightly shortened. The red piping can also be seen to follow the back seams as on the stable jacket. The white leather pouch-belt has a plain black leather pouch for pistol ammunition, worn on the back.
The lance cap, reduced in size since 1856 has a black leather skull and blue cloth upper part. The flat top was protected by black patent leather. The boss at the base of the black and white horsehair plume was brass or gilding metal gimp. The 9th were distinguished by a gilding metal band around the waist of the cap instead of cloth braid. The yellow cord cap lines were attached to a ring fixed to the back of the cap.
The front of the tunic was covered with a scarlet plastron formed by folding back the lapels. The lapels could be buttoned across to show a blue front in marching order. They wear yellow striped, blue breeches and knee boots. Swords are suspended from a waist-belt made of webbing material hidden beneath the tunic.
