The sergeant wears dress uniform but with the undress forage cap. His rank is shown on his right arm only, three gold lace chevrons with crossed swords above, to indicate that he is a Sergeant Instructor of Fencing. This rank had the status of 2nd Class Staff but entitled him to wear 1st Class Staff uniform. This added gold lace to the scarlet collar and cuffs and gold cords to the shoulders. He has blue dress trousers with a double yellow stripe.
The gold cord cap lines are still worn in this order of dress despite the fact that he does not wear a lance-cap. The end of the lines that normally attach to the lance-cap are looped onto the second button on the right of his tunic. The pill-box forage cap has a wide gold-lace cap-band and gold braid around the top edge and forming a cross on top with a gold button in the centre. He carried a sword with a white leather sword knot and white slings attached to a hidden waist-belt.
