The blue lancer tunic is more clearly shown in this photo of Lieutenant William Henry Fife who joined the regiment as a cornet on 1 April 1868. He was promoted to lieutenant on 25 March 1871 and captain on 16 Feb 1878 He left the regiment in 1882. His rank is shown as an embroidered crown on each side of his collar.
The rounded collar is low so that the gold lace leaves only a narrow showing of scarlet. The gold double-cord shoulder straps have a small gilt button. The scarlet lapels are fixed back but not buttoned; we can see the button-hole just above the ends of the cap-lines. The wearing of the cap-lines is well shown here. The olivet ends are hooked onto the top button, to hang on the left side. Two lines are wrapped around his chest from the right shoulder appearing again as the cord round his neck. This is the method of dealing with the end of the cap-line that is normally attached to the lance-cap. However, this officer wears an undress forage cap, which is blue with a wide gold lace cap-band and gold braid crossing over the top. A gold laced girdle covers the lowest two buttons of the tunic which are flat. The gold lace on his scarlet pointed cuffs is built up with padding.
