Major Thomas Wildman was a proud man who employed artists to paint him in various ways. The portrait of him standing wearing 9th Lancer uniform can usefully be compared to this equestrian portrait. He wears the same full dress uniform but here he has a pouch-belt. It should have pickers and chains, but the artist was probably told to leave them out of the picture, the better to show off his Waterloo medal.
The horse furniture is clearly seen, showing a reversed GR cypher on the back and front, with a crown and IX over L. This is a relatively uncomplicated shabraque compared with later patterns. The dress sabretache has a slightly different GR cypher with a crown, and a scroll for the battle honour PENINSULA. Both shabraque and sabretache are edged in herringbone pattern gold lace. The trumpeter has a white jacket with red facings, and a white lance cap with a red plume.
