The artist Orlando Norie, working in the latter half of the 19th century, devised this reconstruction of an officer of the 9th Light Dragoons wearing the uniform and equipment that belonged to Captain Oakes-Jones, photos of which are in this Uniforms section. Around the turn of the century cavalry officers took to wearing the pouch-belt which was needed for pistol ammunition. This officer wears a white leather belt on his left shoulder with a plain black leather pouch. The blue jacket is waist-length without tails at the back, and Norie has suggested the silver lace or braid on the back seams without knowledge of the detail. The blue and silver sabretache hangs on the rider’s left side, with his sword, that is either the 1788 or 1796 pattern.
