Charles Garrett was killed at the battle of Hyderabad on 24 Mar 1843. He was born in Deptford, Kent on 15 July 1809. He was the son of Vice Admiral Henry Garrett RN, Governor of Haslar Hospital. His elder brother, William, was an Artillery officer who died in 1833 at the age of 29. Charles was posted as cornet in the 9th BLC in 1826. He was promoted to lieutenant on 28 Dec 1827 and captain on 23 July 1832. He took part in operations at Jaipur in December 1835 and was on furlough from February 1837 until Feb 1840. At the battle of Meeanee, on 17 Feb 1843, his life was saved by Trooper Mootee Sing. At the battle of Hyderabad, on 24 Mar, he fought bravely but was killed in action. He was married to Frances Cordelia Smith at Nimach on 24 Mar 1832. She was the daughter of Lieutenant-General Samuel Smith who commanded the 9th BLC in 1829.
